White flares over Lydd, Kent?

Hello,

I was staying down in Romney Marsh (well, Greatstone to be exact), Kent last week and observed a series of bright white flares, high in the sky from the Lydd direction (south westerdly of Lydd Airport). This occured on Wednesday 24th at about 9.30pm (twilight). More were sent up every few seconds before disppearing after a short time. The whole sequence was about 10 minutes.

I was just wondering what these were for, and why they were being set off? Why that location?

I’m aware of there being a military range down at Lydd – there also being a firing range at Hythe, so was event connected with that? I’ve posted it in this category for this reason but please feel free to move to where any mod sees fit.

I’ve had a look about but can’t seem to find anything which suitably answers my question!
