Modern Assault Glider??

The week just gone, I have been working with Blackhawk helicopters.
Yes it is great stuff and all, but for many years I have been pondering over the modern day use of the ‘assault glider’?

The thing is with modern technologies, which has allowed for the likes of more accurate and steerable parachutes, the versatility of the assault helicopter, and the STOL capability of transport aircraft (the likes of the Caribou……….) the day of the assault glider is and has been finished for almost 50-years.

But after many years as an infantrymen/Pioneer, and working out of helicopters and transports aircraft, I am the first one to ID the fact that the assault helicopter is still noisy (although not as much as it once was!), which can in many occasions take away the element of tactical surprise.
(Do not get me wrong – I do not mean that the assault glider could replace the helicopter or STOL transport!)

So I was thinking, what with modern technology, the likes of carbon fibre (light weight and strength) and GPS, and the firepower that modern man portable weapons offer – is there a feasible chance that a modern designed ‘assault glider’ and its load carrying capability be brought back into the realms of military operations.

Or what about a UPV glider, being used to bring in stores and ammo into AO, which would free up helicopters etc….

Just a thought!
But I am interested in what you think!!
