Rifle-grenade launched close support UAV?

Been watching a few documentaries on Afghanistan, mostly British patrols getting “ambushed”. Seems quite common that they get under cover and that they don’t have time to get external aerial support. In those situations the patrol has a limited idea of the layout of the enemy position.

Micro/mini-UAVs are much talked about and could be used by the patrol to recce the enemy position whilst they remain under cover – but getting up to launch one (like a throwing launch) can be risky.

Just a thought, but why not have a short-loiter mini-uav with a warhead that can be launched from a rifle (as per a rifle grenade). That way the patrol could remain under cover to launch the UAV.

The warhead would be a grenade sized one. The purpose of the UAV would be:

a) to see the enemy disposition
b) to draw fire (thus revealing positions)
c) intimidate the enemy (it has a bomb on it)
d) waste enemy ammo
e) draw fire (thus allowing repositioning of own troops or distract for an attack)
f) provide moral support to friendly forces (hey I’m stuck behind this small wall but we are doing something, we can reach out and touch the enemy blah blah)
g) destroy key enemy positions – after providing ueful intell, rather than just crash, aim it at the most worthwhile target
h) over-the-visual-horizon guided missile (small warhead and low velocity but still…)

Thoughts?
