centrifugal common?

I recently saw the description of The Honeywell engine in the L159.

“The F124 is a two-shaft non-afterburning turbofan engine with three-stage LP axial compressor. The HP compressor has four axial stages followed by one centrifugal.”

I thought centrifugal jet engines went out with the Nene and that axial flow engines were superior. Are there any centrifugal flow engines besides the F124? Are there any advantages to them?
