Peru to upgrade fighter jets in Israel
Peruvian Airforce general Hector Narvaez yesterday announced that the Fuerza Aerea Peruana will send its Russian-made Sukhoi fighter jets to Israel for overhaul as well as a thorough update. The whole fleet had been grounded due to several fatal accidents. A Peruvian diplomat on the condition of anonymity told Peru Prensa that the decision was a reaction to last month diplomatic crisis as well as the aggressive behavior by Venezuelan fire-brand leader Hugo Chavez. After the killing of a rebel leader inside Ecuador both Venezuela and Ecuador moved troops to its borders bringing Latin America to the brink of war. The upgrade realized by Israeli aircraft industries will include advanced avionics, a terrain following radar, the ability to carry laser guided ammunition as well as the latest Israeli missiles. Analysts inside Peru stated that the governemnt considers the recent acquisition of advanced fighter jets and air defence systems by Venezuela a serious threat to stability in Latin America.
