How does Flight Gear compare to commercial flight sims?

I see the overall gallery of planes available is beginning to reach critical mass where just about every major model is covered. But not being a big flight sim buff I have no idea if the time to download this open source flight sim is worthwhile or not. Anyone have an opinion on Flight Gear?
