Scaling up/down – a thing of the past?

You only have to look at the ‘stretching’ and ‘downsizing’ that happens with civil aircraft types to know that it’s par for the course. Boeing and Airbus have it as Number One Commandment.

It also has a history in the military arena, not just with transports like the C-130 but also warbirds – MiG-15/MiG17, Crusader/Corsair, Mirage series…

Is this now something which we’re unlikely to see again? Are modern combat types just so mission specific that they do not lend themselves easily to ‘scaling’? Do the multi-role types, by their very nature, imply that there can be no conceivable requirement for their future modification in terms of size?
