The end of the interceptor?

Yes, I know it’s been predicted more than once before, going back at least as far as the 60’s…

… but can anyone now make out a case for manned aircraft filling the interception role in any kind of hot strategic or even local point defence role? I’m talking a shooting war here rather than Putinesque photo-opportunity Bear flybys etc. I’m talking about defence against aircraft or missiles with hostile intent against your territory.

Manned aircraft, when considered up against the missile alternative, just have too many downsides, it seems to me. Perhaps those 60’s planners had it right – they were just ahead of their time.
