Is the military heliocopter dead?

Considering the recent USA helicopter losses to
small arms fire, I have a question:

Is it time for helicopters to be retired from free-
fire zones? :confused:

Additionally, is it time to develop heavily armored
V/STOL aircraft to take over helo roles in areas
where there is such dangerous anti-aircraft fire?

I only ask these questions to stimulate discussion
and to develop alternate strategies that might
prevent such heavy losses of human life and material.
