MiG-25PDS and Su-15TM

I wonder what purpose did these planes serve in the PVO in the 80s they are obviously for bomber interception but what if they encounter fighters?
do they stand any chance against even older fighters like F-4s of the NATO airforces and do their BVR capability give them any advantage over the F-16A/B without AIM-120 in the 80s?
