I was wondering why Merlin helicopters have 3 engines in them. Could some tell me as to why this is?

Are packard and Rolls Royce merlin parts interchangeable?
I think this has been answered elsewhere by better qualified people but as far as I know the answer is a qualified No.
The reason that I have put it in Italics is there are a few hybrid engines out there which are happily running on a mix of parts from Pakard and Rolls Royce. There are certainly quite a few non runners which are a mix of parts.
