One stupid question

Hey guys,

Now I thought I was right clued up on mil aviation and all that until I heard the tragic news of the Nimrod that crashed in Afghanistan I then wondered.
What is a maritime patrol aircraft doing in a landlocked country? So if someone could tell me what role the RAF have for it over there I would be grateful thank you!
