Tornado Arresting Hook?????

Hi!

On a quick visit to Elvington, I noticed what appeared to be a Naval-type arresting hook at the back of a Tornado GR4.

I noticed on a recent German Typhoon photo that it also appears to have the same arrangement at the back.

Is the hook designed with a carrier landing in mind or is there another, more common use?
