In The Times dated 15 December 1937 there is the following:

Plt Off Andrew Aitken, Sgt Duncan Robert Francis Ross, Corporal John Bennet and LAC William Lemuel Sillince lost their lives in an accident at Stopham Bridge, Sussex on Monday (13th) night to an aircraft of 149 Squadron, RAF Mildenhall. Mr Aitken was the pilot.

The aeroplane was heard flying low before it crashed in a sloping field about a mile and a half from the main Pulborough-Petworth road. The amchine took fire on crashing, and villagers who hurried to the scene were beaten back by the intense heat.

At that time 149 Squadron flew Heyfords.
