In the Army, successive ranks generally command higher echelons of formations (example : Lt-Platoon, Capt/Maj-Company, Lt Col/Col-Battalion, Brig Gen-Brigade, Maj Gen-Division, Lt Gen-Corps)
Now the Air Forces of most countries do not have as many echelons in their orbats but they do have all the corresponding ranks of the Army. So who commands what?
I know a Wing Commander is CO of a squadron, and large AF stations are commanded by Air Cmdres but what does a Gp Capt do (Command a wing because there don’t seem to be groups anymore?) And if an Air Marshal commands an Air Command then what does an AVM do?
Doesn’t anyone feel that the USAF Army style ranks now make more sense as compared to the UK(and commonwealth ranks) since the rank in the RAF no longer corresponds to it’s implication. (Sqdn Ldrs do not command squadrons, Wg Cmdres do not command wings etc.)
Can someone post like a comprehensive list.
Thanks a lot
