Should the French have chosen the F-18 in the 80's?

To replace both the F-8 and Super Retarded, and most likely, would’ve saved some money away from the Rafale program which the French could’ve used for Mirage 4000 or a 5th generation fighter capable of smiting the Eurofighter?
