Like many people, I feel that the current plans for the RAF are a little ill advised. As i am obviously a more skilled planner than the government or MoD 😀 I have come up with my own ideas of how things should be run:
Strike Command:
Replace the existing Tornado and Jaguar squadrons with muli-role Typhoons.
Join the USA in developing a theater bomber, such as the FB-22.
Scrap the Nimrod MRA.4 and buy the MMA from the USA.
Joint RAF/FAA
Replace the FAA and RAF Harrier squadrons with the F-35C. Failing this, consider purchase of either F-18E/Fs, Rafale, or (my personal favorite by far), an anglisised Su-33. This last idea would be controversial, but with British avionics/radar/weapons and a few modifications, it could turn into a highly capable carrier and land based platform.
Costs would be high, but with JSF costs spiraling, adapting an existing platform with newly developed technology for the Typhoon might be cheaper?
Transport
Sell off the C-130Js, replace all C-130s with A400M as soon as possible.
Replace all VC-10s and Tristars with the A-330 as soon as possible.
Buy enough C17s to fully equip an entire squadron.
Helicopters:
Buy more Merlins, replace the Puma, expand the fleet.
A new squadron of Chinooks would also be useful
Training:
Re-design the hawk, give it an afterburning engine and allow a fighter version for export. Replace old Hawks with either new ones, or the T-50.
Well, those are the best things for the RAF IMO. What do we all think?
