USAF pulls-out of Suffolk base

The US Third Air Force which has been based in Suffolk for more than 30 years is being disbanded.
About 100 personnel are to move from the Mildenhall base to Germany.

The changes, which end 50 years of the Third Air Force in Britain, are part of a reorganisation of the USAF mainly in response to the war on terrorism.

The reorganisation will see all US Air Forces in Europe brought under the command of the Warfighting Headquarters in Ramstein.

The most senior US Air Force officer in Britain will still be at Mildenhall, but he will be vice-commander of the 16th Air Force instead of commander of the Third Air Force.

The last commander of the Third Air Force, Major General Mike Gould, handed over to the new vice-commander of the 16th Air Force at a ceremony at the base.

At the same time a new unit, the 501st Combat Support Wing, has been created at Mildenhall.
