The meaning of "V" in VF-84 (US Navy Fighter Sqdrn)

Would anyone care to explain the history behind the US Navy squadron type letter codes? What exacly is the meaning of those darned letter (“V”) used almost 😎 everywhere: “VA-“, “VFA-“, etc.
