would it have been better that the Soviets/Russians stuck to producing the Yak-141? what were it’s capabilities in comparison to say the Su-27K and MiG-29K for carrier use.
so far from what we know.. the Su-27 cannot take off with a decent load or fuel from the Kuznetsov.. could the Yak-141?
should the Yak-141 development prove successful, the Kiev class would’ve had much better air defense and perhaps more appeal to regular VTOL carriers instead of CATOBAR carriers.
perhaps India should’ve picked up the license for it and finish it themselves in the early-mid 90’s..
some modernizations could be made, a Yak-141 with Zhuk-ME, modern MFDs and EW, etc.
the benefits include a replacement for the Sea Harrier (the MiG-29K is not in production either, keep that in mind). It would also allow the IN some flexibility in the types of carrier purchases and future design as they would no longer be relegated to just CATOBAR (meaning, the Invincible would be an option, the modification of the Gorshkov being quicker as it doesn’t need to make room the ski jump on the bow, a more manageable and simpler design for future ADS, etc).
should it be cheap (probably might not), it could’ve been used by the AF as well, perhaps replacing the MiG-23 or 21.
any thoughts?
