In the latest issue of “Combat Aircraft” (Vol.6 No.3) is a short note regarding the USMC’s search for a new gunship:
The US Marine Corp’s deputy commandant for aviation recently approached Bell Heliciopter and asked the contractor to investigate the development of an armed variant of its commercial BA608 tiltrotor that could serve as an escort for the MV-22B titrotor transport.
Bell has already been working on several ideas for tiltrotor escortsthat included a BA609 derivative and plans to make a presentation to the USMC.
Its concepts include:
— a newly designed attack tiltrotor,
— a hybrid that combines the V-22’s wing and rotors with a newly designed gunship fuselage.
— The most advanced concept is based on a new type of tiltrotor aircraft that could fold its rotors away and transition to a jet engine whilst in flight.
