alternative aviation fuels

with oil prices high as they are everybody’s talking abt cars and motor vehicles running on alternative fuels like methane, alcohol, fuel cells etc that could take over when our fossil fuel supplies run low and are less pollutive and all. but no word at all on any equivalent for airplanes, everything present and future still seems to run on avgas or the JP-x jet fuel series…

are there, then, any initiatives to develop successors to the JP-x series that provide the same benefits as their automobile counterparts?

it seems most the effort is going to liquid-hydrogen storage systems to power scramjets and pulse detonation wave engines and such. nuclear-powered planes were ditched long ago and methane- or alcohol-powered fighters sound quite laughable…
