This question has probably been done to death but I just feel like reviving it.
With the probably delay, or even failure of the JSF project, does this spell disaster for the 2 new RN carriers? It could result in another revision of their size to accomodate the heavier JSF or reorganisation of the carrier configuration for another aircraft.
Whilst the rotary wing of the carriers is well catered for with Merlins, Sea Lynx or even the WAH-64 available for shipboard operation, talk of an Osprey AEW variant, and also rumours of S3 Vikings, the fighter, fighter-bomber, IFR, EW components are still up for discussion.Since co-operation with the French will be taking place as they look to base their Rafaels from their carrier, is it time to reassess what aircraft will fill their roles?
There aren’t too many aircraft capable of shipboard operation currently available or on the drawing boards so what could be put into service?
1/Harrier and Sea Harrier mix-they are currently available and ready to fly but are limited in their abilities against many other conventional aircraft despite their current and past successes, but still a viable platform if coupled with a landbased asset. An older asset that could be limited when it runs into aircraft like Flanker that are being fielded by possibly hostile nations.
2/The proposed Sea Typhoon (is that not called a waterspout?).Anyway, this would be a protracted development but still attractive because of the similarities between it and it land based counterpart.
3/Rafael M.Another sensible option.Yeah it is French but it means the carriers could be built nearly identically in fitting and structure since the French will be flying them off their too.A foreign sale of it by the French would be a boost to its reputation, would bring down its individual airframe cost, carrier cost brought down by more commonality and other potential savings to be gained from the French by buying from them.
4/Super Hornet. Not a popular aircraft with some people here but variants like the Growler boost the carriers capability. Its size may be against it though as would some performance factors.
5/The Russian choice.Westernised Russian types provide a relatively low cost option.A MiG29 variant should be a suitable size but purchasing Russian aircraft could be a political or logistical problem.A Flanker variant is another possibilty. It is one of the most advanced and capable aircraft of its type but again would have size issues.
The potential building of aircraft carriers by other nations, and the planes they embark, may be affected by the UK’s future choices. Will naval J10s appear?, naval LCAs? or even the reinstatement of the Yak 141 development occuring when it is realised that CTOL carriers turn out to be finanically restrictive to anyone but the Americans.
Anyone want to discuss?
