I’m only speculating here:
The USMC’s CH-46E is at the end of their service life and already there are flight restrictions. Thinking of the cancellation of the RAH-66, perhaps that bolt out of the blue strikes anew and V-22 is killed – well, only speculating 🙂 . Then the USMC would need – urgently! – a replacement for the Sea Knight. And with the Presidential VIP-chopper competition under way, what about the EH101 as a CH-46 replacement and a MV-22 surrogate?
A quick’n dirty comparison of CH-46 / EH101 / V-22:
empty-max TOW (t): 7-11 / 10.5-15.6 / 14.5-21.5 VTOL (25.0 STOL)
int-ext payload: 25pax-4.0t-4.5t / 30pax-5.5t-5.5t / 24pax-4.5t-6.8t
internal dimensions (m): 7.4×1.8×1.8 / 7.1×2.5×1.8 / 7.4×1.6×1.6
height folded (m): 5.1 / 5.2 / 5.4
length max-folded (m): 25.7-14 / 23-15.8 / 17.5-19.2
cruise (kts): 145 / 150 / 240
Looking at these data, the EH101 would offer more space (a lot more compared to the MV-22!) and payload than the CH-46 and the MV-22, but would be slower than the MV-22 (which is a tactical question). Additionally it would be about 10t lighter, which would ease the stability problems on the Wasp LHDs and Tarawa LHAs. Lockheed has teamed up with AugustaWestland (and Bell) in the Presidential competition, so the link is already established. The EH101 for the USMC would kill Bell Helicopters as an idependent manufacturer, but provide the Corps with an agreeable helicopter. (See? I do praise European built equipment!)
Any comments or thoughts?
