Very Long Range A2A Missiles..any good use?

Are very long range Missiles useful in BVR Fights btw Fighter Planes??

We know USA has Phoenix, but its Aim-120 which steals the spotlight all the time…is it the costs (im assuming phoenix is expensive and no point in wasting money doing target practice on inferior AF)

or is there something else…
