JORN to get $62M upgrade for BMD role

Announced amidst a rather loud protest today, Senetor Robert Hill (minister for defence) stated that the Jindalee Over-the-horizon Radar Network (Jorn) is to receive a $62M upgrade to further enhance it’s capabilities as a Balistic Missile Defence Radar Control Station.

The network presently is capable of detection of aircraft upto 2000 naughtical miles off Australian shores. With this upgrade it will allow a dome effect on the radar covering basically all of Australia from any threat from air attack!

Anyone who has seen the Jindalee site will be impressed by the size of the instalation, but the thought of it’s complexity is down rated with an explanation about the ,basic principles on how it works, it’s rather interesting and very simple. The network is being built in England and the US with a few other countries considering a purchace.
