Hyderabad , Feb. 20

THE second version of Brahmos, an Air launched missile to strike land targets, is all set to be developed under the Indo-Russian collaborative initiative, according to Dr Sivathanu Pillai, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Brahmos.

The missile capable of being launched from the Sukhoi 30’s will be developed and tested in the next two to three years with development work carried out by both Indian and Russian industry and research institutes, Dr Pillai told Business Line.

This second version of Brahmos, the supersonic cruise missile has been taken up following the successful completion of the first version — the Anti Ship, capable of being launched from ship and mobile platforms, after a number of flights.

“With a 100 per cent flight test result, this version is a world leader with no comparable missile that can match its capability in speed and performance”, Dr Pillai said.

The Indian Navy has expressed keenness in inducting the Brahmos missile and the Indo-Russian company is gearing itself to line up the production schedule preparedness.

A number of production facilities with the participation of industries both from India and Russia have been identified and are being set up in a consortium approach. While Hyderabad is the technical centre for Brahmos, New Delhi is the design and management headquarters.

In terms of export potential for the missile, Dr Pillai said several countries have shown interest. At international air show, it is proving a big draw. However, a final decision on exports has to be taken at the highest level by both the Indian and Russian Governments, he added.
