Aviation Comes Eighth in Russian Defense Ministry Priorities

Putin Amazed By Defense Ministry Aviation Policy

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his astonishment that the Defense Ministry is not considering aviation as a priority for development and financing.

“Aviation, above everything else, is falling out of working order, into disrepair, and the Defense Ministry has put it in 8th place in its list of priorities,” the President on live television on Thursday.

The head of state said that an armament program had been adopted until 2010, while an armament program for 2005 to 2025 would be adopted next year. “I must say that, as distinct from previous years, financing of these programs has been implemented in full and consistently,” Putin said.

However, according to him, certain problems do exist. In particular, the Russian leader believes, a great deal depends on the priorities set by the Defense Ministry. Putin said that the priorities of the Navy had been raised slightly, but he acknowledged that he could not understand why the air force had been placed so low on the list when “modern wars are fought with aviation support above all else.” The President is convinced that specialists should determine the priorities. “A great deal depends on them, depends on interaction between the producers, customers and organizers of this whole process,” the head of state concluded.
