I appologise if my observations appear ignorant
With the advent of ever sophiscated BVR missiles is there any real need for highly manoeverable fighters? We are constantly told that close dog fights are thing of the past because of BVR.
So why is so much effort and money is being spent on developing highly manoeverable aircraft and on technologies like thrust vectoring?
Wouldn’t something like the modern version of British BAC Lightening be more appropriate?
If you could install a modern radar and BVR capability on to something like the BAC Lightening, it could probably take out adversaries like Su-35, as long as it doesn’t let them come too near it.
For this sort of sitaution powerful engines are required to give high acceleration and high climb rate.
I think that is the concept behind the much under rated RAF Tornado F3. An aircraft like the F3 is never going to turn heads at airshows, but in a real life combat situation an F3 armed with AMRAAM would defeat Mig-29 and Su-35.
