At this time, the US DoD is pressing a VTOL transport aircraft into service with the V-22 Osprey. This isn’t really a new idea, and several configurations of planes halfway helicopter and conventional aircraft have been tested and flown over the last half century. Not all of them were American: Canada, the UK and the Soviet Union also such projects. Name them.
