Ive deleted my original thread which turned into a propaganda flame war and have saved my original message and the first 3 responces which are copy and pasted below.
Flamers- Stay the f**k of my thread!
I said:
Im of the opinion that 4th gen FBW fighters are a luxury only for those AFs that can afford them, and that conventional 3rd gen fighters can do just as well in the right hands and with the right tactics. Fighters like the Eurocanards and are too expensive for the PAF, F-16, K-50 and ching kuo are not available. Which only leaves New Chinese fighters, which are either not ready, not proven or just chopped up mig-21s. But as an alternative, Ive been thinking that maybe Pakistan can put into production an older western fighter which would not impose any problems with technology transfer, and would give them a inexpensive single type they can rely on as a front line fighter. The first choice that comes to my mind is the F-5, which can be upgraded to BVR capabilitys, and is very simple and cheap to operate. And they wouldnt have to worry about being cut off as they would build it themselves

2 points.
1 – Pakistan isn’t really ready to manufacture a fighter on its own yet (it will still only be making parts for the FC-1)
2 – The FC-1 offers exactly the capability you mentioned. Compare the the F-5 to the FC-1, and (provided the PAF selects a decent avionics fit) then it would offer more than the F-5 in pretty much every department except possibly hard points.

Iran has done just that. They’ve made a F-5.
If the project is successful, they could look at examples from there.
But making a F-5 is not the easiest thing in the world even with a lot of samples on hand, judging from the Iranian example.
It might not be any easier than building the FC-1 that Pakistan is pursuing right now.

The JF-17 is our core fighter project just as the Azarakhsh/F-5 is to the Iranians.
The JF-17 will begin production in two years with parts being produced in Pakistan. Eventually Pakistan will build the plane in its entirety.
Although there is speculation on whether the PLAAF induct the plane in numbers, it is not all that important. The plane is designed with the eventuality in mind that a production line will be set up in Pakistan.
If the PLAAF inducts the FC-1, then China will build that version alongside the JF-17. If the PLAAF decides to use the J-10 or another plane as its low component instead of the FC-1, the JF-17 will still be made in Pakistanc.
