India’s air force chief in Russia for talks on missile outfitting
NEW DELHI – The head of India’s air force, Air Chief Marshal Sriniwaspuram Krishnaswamy, left Oct. 15 on a five-day trip to Russia to procure source codes for MiG-29B and Sukhoi Su-30 MKI aircraft so the service can mount Western air-to-air missiles on the Russian aircraft. The air force wants to mount Israeli Derby missiles and South African R-Darter missiles on its fighters, but needs aircraft system source codes to make them work, a defense official said.
India’s MiG-29B and Su-30 MKI fleet currently carries only Russian Vympel R-77 missiles. Krishnaswamy also will seek advice from Russian air force chief Col. Gen. Vladimir Mikhailov about his service’s experience with mounting Western-built air-to-air beyond-visual-range (BVR) missiles on Russian combat aircraft.
The Indian air force also wants to buy R-73 M air-to-air missiles from Russia’s Rosoboronexport, Python-4s from Israel’s Rafael, Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missiles from France’s MBDA and R-Darters from Denel’s Kentron division.
These missiles will be needed for India’s MiG-21 bis, MiG-27s and Jaguars, which will be upgraded to carry them over the next decade.
