CCS clears Advanced Jet Trainer deal

The Cabinet Committee on Security on Tuesday cleared the acquisition of Advanced Jet Trainers for the Indian Air Force, Defence Secretary Ajay Prasad said.

The decision was taken at a two-hour long meeting of the CC presided over by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Prasad, however, did not specify from which country India would buy the AJTs.

The IAF had sought purchase of 66 AJTs for stage III training of pilots and it had been hanging fire since 1984.

Among those who participated in the meeting included Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, Defence Minister George Fernandes, External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha, Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission K C Pant and Cabinet Secretary Kamal Pande.
