Tomcat vs Hornet
From the writers and publisher’s of AirForces Monthly, comes a new and unique one-off special publication looking at two of the most awesome fighter aircraft – the Grumman F-14 Tomcat and the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet.
Today the F-14 is gradually being replaced by the new F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. But in its day the F-14 Tomcat was one of the most feared combat aircraft in the world, due in no small part to its excellent long range radar and the equally long range AIM-54 Phoenix air-to-air missile. Proven in combat and undefeated in the air-to-air role, the F-14 has provided the US Navy with excellent fleet protection and served as a deterrent to potential enemies.
The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet is now part of the Boeing stable following the 1997 take over by Boeing and was introduced to replace the A-6 Intruder and A-7 Corsair II in the strike/attack role. However, it can also fly the air-to-air mission and since its introduction in the early 1980s has seen continued development. Today the new and larger F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is one of the most capable aircraft the US Navy has ever operated and is now entering fleet service.
This special magazine looks at both aircraft in detail as well as giving personal views on flying both from pilots that have flown them in combat and features no less than 321 photographs.
