Composite systems

Oki guys i did not want to take over the FC-1 thread or change its main thingy.. so i started this one

I know some of ADA’s work Autolay etc etc.. it is just that when i read they use Glass fibre I was, well, horrified, its not a good system for aircraft, its specific performance is very low compared to Carbon, although it is cheap, and it is better for impact.

glass fibres have moved on over the years but to put them in aircraft ?????????? yes they have great impact tolerance but then so does ABS plastic but i would not use that in an aircraft.

As for Kevlar, its is good for impact but thats about it, its compression properties are not so good, its hard to design with and it “bulks up” easily.

Most aircraft now are using MIL standard composite systems, like the Intermediate modulus fibres, in tough epoxy, or even PEEK/BMI or APC-2

I just wanted to know what composite system ADA uses, coz i doubt if its glass fibre. Could some one please answear this, i guess that LCA prob has glass for semi structural parts, BMC or glass mat could be used internally. but for structural part i think they would use graphite/epoxy.

40% composite aircraft means not a lot if u dont give data on what is used where.
