AMRITSAR, India (AP) _ An Indian air force MiG-21 crashed
into a residential neighborhood in northern Punjab state
Monday, police said. It was the second such accident in
three days.
The pilot bailed out, but was injured. Six people on the
ground were hurt, two of them critically, when the fighter
jet smashed into a house in the town of Ambala, said police
officer Randhir Singh.
«A MiG-21 Indian Air Force plane was involved in an
accident right after takeoff from the Ambala air base,»
said air force spokesman Squadron Leader R.K. Dhingra in
New Delhi, the Indian capital. «There may have been a fire
in the engine but preliminary reports have not come in
yet.»
Defense Ministry spokesman P.K. Bandopadhyaya said the
plane «was on a routine patrol when it crashed. A court of
inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of the
crash.»
The police officer, Singh, said the pilot was admitted to
a military hospital, and that at least one house caught
fire in Ambala, about 230 kilometers (145 miles) south of
Amritsar, one of Punjab’s main cities.
A MiG-23 fighter aircraft crashed Friday in another
civilian area in Punjab, killing four people and injuring
seven when it hit four houses and set them on fire.
India’s aging Soviet-made MiG fleet is prone to accidents.
In the past six years, the government has reported over 100
crashes that killed more than 50 pilots.
