RUSSIA’S STEALTH BEING PREPARED FOR EXPORT
Rossiiskaya Gazeta, March 12, 2003, p. 1
Irina Presnyakova, Marina Kolesnikova
RUSSIAN SCIENTISTS HAVE CREATED A NEW TECHNOLOGY, WHICH ENSURES LOW
VISIBILITY LEVEL. IT IS COMPETITIVE ON THE WORLDWIDE ARMS MARKET, WHICH
ENABLES TO HOPE THAT THIS EQUIPMENT MAY BE EXPORTED.
BODY:
Andrei Lagarkov (United Institute of High Temperatures) and Mikhail
Pogosyan, director general of AVPK Sukhoi, doctor of technical science
reported on the prospects of creating invisible planes using Stealth
technology at the board meeting of the Russian Academy of Science (RAS).
Four main components, on which creation of planes having small absolute
cross-section for electromagnetic waves depends, were declared in the report
Fundamental and Applied Problems of Stealth Technologies. In particular, it
is required to work out an adequate electro-dynamic model of the aircraft.
The mathematical methods enabling high-precision calculation of the absolute
cross-section with any materials of which the aircraft is made are available
already now.
As for radio-absorbing materials used in the construction, dependently on
the place whereto they are skinned, they should have various radio-physical
qualities (the so-called dielectric and magnetic permeability). The
thickness of the skinning and the number of layers change in compliance with
a complicated law, which is deduced based on the computer simulation. (…)
As the reporters noted, some fundamental problems remained unsettled thus
far. At the same time, the technologies created meet the requirements made
for 5th-generation planes.
The settled tasks include: organization of smooth junctions between the wing
and the hull, placement of weaponry in the inner compartments of the
fuselage, wing sweep angle selection, etc. Moreover, it is now clear how the
number of junctions could be reduced; large-size components created and
ensure high-precision manufacture of them.
A fundamentally new technology created in the creative cooperation between
the industry and RAS and tested in tests flights of Su-47 and Su-27M planes
has been the result of the studies. The technology ensures low visibility
level. The Russian creation is competitive on the worldwide arms market,
which enables one to hope that this equipment may be exported. (…)
