A crew member is believed to have died after a Harrier jet crashed on take-off at RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire.
The two crew members ejected from the Royal Navy trainer when it crashed at the airfield near Peterborough shortly after 0930 GMT.

One was airlifted to hospital in Nottingham with minor injuries, but his crewmate is thought to have been killed.

A spokesman for the RAF base said the Harrier had been attempting a normal take-off rather than its trademark vertical take-off.

Rescue operation

Two RAF rescue helicopters were scrambled from RAF Leconfield in East Yorkshire and RAF Wattisham in Suffolk.

They joined emergency services in the rescue operation.

The crew members were on a training mission, but were not trainees.

RAF Wittering is known as the home base of the Harrier.
