“FC-1 Assembly Begins,
With 2003 Flight Target
ZHUHAI
Chengdu Aircraft has begun final assembly of the first prototype of its FC-1/Super-7 light fighter, with a maiden flight anticipated next June, according to program officials.
Construction of the prototype began in July, with the aircraft to be powered by a version of the MiG-29’s RD-33 engine.
The FC-1 is a joint program between China and Pakistan. One Chengdu official said the Pakistani air force would purchase 150 of the type, although the extent of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) commitment remains to be determined.
Initial flight trials of the single-engine light fighter will focus on airframe, engine integration and handling. In parallel to this stage, selection of the aircraft’s weapons management system, including radar, would be determined, the official said. A second series of flight tests would follow, focusing on systems and weapons integration.
The Chengdu official suggested a PLAAF decision on whether to commit to the program would follow the initial flight tests. The PLAAF may in fact be waiting to compare the FC-1/Super-7 with the performance of the prototype of Chengdu’s F-7MF.
The F-7MF is the latest in the long line of design iterations of the F-7, or the J-7 as the aircraft is designated within the PLAAF inventory. Based on the MiG-21, the F-7 has spawned a considerable number of versions.
The F-7MF replaces the annular intake with a single-chin intake, providing for a far greater radome volume. Flight testing of the prototype got underway about two years ago.
While a model of the F-7MF shown at Zhuhai sported canards, industry sources suggested that, at least as initially flown, the prototype aircraft did not have large canards. A previous F-7MF model appeared to indicate the aircraft would have smaller, fixed destabilizers in front of the wing leading edge.”
