In this month issue of one of the most prominent local defence/strategic magazines-the chief of RMN has outlined the need for a light carrier in the near future. This vessel dubbed multipurpose support ship will improved the RMN capabilities in handling multitudes of task given to them in order to protect Malaysian interest in the region.
The vessel will be carrying tactical transport and ASW/ASuW helos +if the budget permit a squadron(half would be more likely)of a fixed wing attack aircraft.A few local shipbuilders has offered to build such vessel (jv with a foreign firm)in Malaysia if the MINDEF gives the green light. From my personal point of view -even if MINDEF gives the go ahead ,the vessel wont be purchased untill 2005 and fixed wing aircraft till 2007-2010.
