VIENNA – The opposition Green Party and a number of Socialists launched a petition to stop the purchase of Eurofighter Typhoon warplanes on the grounds that the plane’s 1.8 bln eur price is too high.
The organisers said their five-day initiative is aimed at gathering 100,000 signatures in order to force parliament to re-examine the deal, which was approved in January.
The Eurofighter is replacing Austria’s ageing fleet of J-35 Draken and
Saab-105 fighter planes.
Austria is expected to buy 24 aircraft, but the government has said recently it has not yet decided on the total number of planes, hinting that the number could be lower.
