ANKARA – Boeing Co has signed a contract to provide four “airborne
early warning and control system/AEWC” aircraft to Turkey, in a deal worth about 1.1 bln USD, a Turkish defence industry official said.
Under the contract, Turkey will buy four of the modified Boeing 737 planes with an option to order two more.
The aircraft are expected to be delivered in 2-3 years. The contract was signed after lengthy negotiations with Boeing since Nov 2000 when Turkey made the company top of the list ahead of three other US rivals
— Lockheed Martin Corp, Northrop Corp and Raytheon Co — in the tender which was launched in 1998.
