the Italian air force sa been making inquiries into the AMX’s career, the type has been involved in 25 major accidents in which 15 people were killed or injured, the military public prosecutors have sought the opinions of 20 AMX pilots in which all was recorded as human error.
It states that almost all the pilots point to several problems but the most common was lack of engine power, there were report of dangers in using the aircraft during combat operations in Bosnia/Yugoslavia especially after bomb release phase, this opinion is also viewed by an AMX RAF exchange pilot Mike Moor, in an interview published in the Italian magazine Volaire’s in Dec 2001 issue.
the AMX’s defenders claim that the aircraft was originally designed for CAS role but that during the balkans, it was used as a medium altitude bomber, a role which it is not designed for.
Within the Italian air force, there are nick names of the AMX being called the F-32 in which it costs 32 million Euros, twice as much as the F-16 but half the performance.
