Read AFM (March 2002) page 66 : feedback.
Shaptons remarks are interesting, maybe already discussed before, but still worth a new topic.
A navalised two-seat F22: F22B. Sounds almost unrealistic with the SH entering service. IMHO, the USN should have invested in this F22B to replaced their F-14A/B/D’s. I’m sure there would be costumers for a two-seat F22, probably the first being the USAF and later the IDF and the JASDF. The 21th century carrier wing should have looked like this:
from 2010 on :
one squadron of F22B’s (16)
two squadrons of F/A-18 C/D’s (updated, new engine but basically the same jet) (2×12)
one squadron of F/A-18 E/F’s (could also be updated F/A-18 C/D’s but it’s way too late now to cancel SH) (12)
one squadron of EF-18’s (6)
+ SH-60’s etc
from 2015 on :
one squadron of F-22B’s
three squadrons of F-35C’s
+ V22’s etc
I know it sounds unrealistic now, but ten years ago, this would probably be the best option. With the F22’s delay, and high prices, a USN version could help keeping this program alive.
It looks like the USAF wants to keep the F22 for its own, instead of promoting it to the Allies.
