How come the F-5 has never become such a succesfull fighter? It was introduced in Vietnam, and some hundred F-5B’s were shipped but never came back (left for the South-Vietnamese government). The F-4 and the F-105 became the stars of Vietnam, but wouldn’t the F-5 be a very handy jet for CSAR and CAS? It was as almost as manouverable as the legendary MiG-21, but was never as succesfull (not only when speaking about the military aspects but also about the economical).
Still, there are a lot of airforces (around the world), who still operate the jet in frontline service, even some western countries like Greece, Norway and South Korea. I’m mainly interested in the old F-5’s (so no F-20’s please), does anyone have pics about Freedom Fighters in Vietnam?
