[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-01-02 AT 07:09 PM (GMT)]The ABL (Armand Belgique/Belgisch Leger) has been reorganised. Instead of a general staff and the 4 forces (army – navy – airforce – medical service) we now have one army, consisting of 4 components (land, air, sea and medical component). This will reduce costs for training, administration and will make things easier for both military and civilians. This is an experiment in NATO, maybe followed by Canada and the Netherlands. For small countries like Belgium, with limited armed forces, this sounds like a very reasonable solution to reduce costs. The money saved will be spend in new armoured vehicles, 7+1 A-400M, EJR-135/145’s, a new transport ship and to modernise our fregattes and minesweepers. In the future, this deal may also include the JSF (55 F-35’s to replace 80 F-16’s).
Any Comments?

PS the new official abbreviation for the Belgian army is ABL (not BAF anymore, Belgian Airforce).
