Which setup is more effective? Personally I’d say having a very agile short range missile with thrust vectoring and high-off boresight tracking ability (and HMS) would definately be preferable, as I don’t think missiles like Mica and Derby can ever match the effectiveness of that type of missile close in. But what if you want to preserve stealth and have only 4 internal hardpoints in the F-35?
Wasn’t it a Dutch F-16 that needed 3 AIM-120’s to down a Serb Mig-29? Sounds to me that -might- have screwed you in the F-35’s case.
