RAF Merlins for CSAR?

With the RAF purchasing 22 {I think} Merlins and the MoD admitting that stub wings, nose turret, door guns etc trials could commence, this ‘copter could {in my opinion} become an extremely good CSAR helicopter. Although my {very limited} info comes only from AFM, the Merlin is supposed to be one of the fastest, most manoverable and most well defended support ‘copters in the world. With, say 10 para’s on board {as well as RAF Reg. gunners}, would this make an ideal way to retrieve downed airmen? Obviously air support would be available.
Any other comments on the Merlin, either RAF or FAA, would be welcome!
thanks
Baz
