The cancellation of the low risk, very high payoff Intruder Upgrade program strikes me as one of the worst in long series of recent USN tactical aviation procurement blunders. In the A-6F the USN would have had a monster strike aircraft capable of hauling over 18000 lbs of weaponry on a 1600 mile HI-LO-HI round trip. True the airframe design is older than dirt and lacks true multirole capabilities {though as does the Sub-par Hornet IMO} but at least it would have given the Navy some credible interim punch.
