CROWELL, Texas (CNN) — The body of a pilot missing after two military jets collided in midair in north Texas was found a few hours after the accident, military officials said. Two other pilots were injured. A statement from Sheppard Air Force Base — where the planes were based — said the solo student pilot of one of the T-38 jets was confirmed dead, but that his name would not be released until his family was notified. The other two pilots parachuted from their damaged craft after the accident, according to Foard County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Traci Stewart. The three pilots were Italian members of the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training program, the Air Force statement said. The two Air Force T-38 jets crashed about 4:17 p.m. CT (5:17 p.m. ET) in Crowell, about 72 miles west of Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls. FAA spokesman John Clabes said the captain of Southwest Airlines Flight 223 saw the airplanes collide and reported it to the FAA. “He’s the one who sighted it. He reported it to us, and we notified the Air Force,” he said.
Others who saw the planes crash on the ground and the two pilots parachute from the jets called police. “The planes were on a routine training mission,” said Sheppard AFB spokeswoman Airman Pamela Stratton. The planes came to rest about 300 yards apart along a rural road, Stewart said. The two pilots who came down in parachutes were taken to Wilbarger General Hospital in Vernon for treatment, but hospital officials declined to release any information on their conditions.
